What Does a Holiday Package Include? A Checklist Before You Pay

By SAGA Editorial Team · Published 30 October 2026 · Updated 30 October 2026

Part of our guide: How to Plan an International Holiday from India: A Step-by-Step Guide

A holiday package is only as good as its written inclusions: before you pay, confirm flights, hotels, meals, transfers, sightseeing, taxes and the cancellation terms line by line. Two packages that look alike can differ in what they leave out, so use the checklist below to compare them fairly.

1. Flights and train or ferry legs

  • Are international and domestic flights included, or is it a land-only package?
  • Which airline class and baggage allowance apply?
  • Are the flight timings and airports confirmed?

2. Hotels

  • Hotel names and category for each night, or "similar hotel" wording.
  • Room type and the number of people in each room.
  • Check-in and check-out times, and any city or resort fees collected at the hotel.

3. Meals

Packages use short codes for meal plans. Ask for them to be written in plain words.

PlanUsually means
Room onlyNo meals
BreakfastDaily breakfast at the hotel
Half boardBreakfast and one more meal
Full boardBreakfast, lunch and dinner

The exact meaning can vary by hotel, so confirm it for your booking.

4. Transfers and local transport

  • Airport pick-up and drop for each city.
  • Private or shared vehicle.
  • Transport between cities and on sightseeing days.

5. Sightseeing and activities

  • Which tours and entry tickets are included, and which are optional and paid on the spot.
  • Whether tours are private or in a group, and whether a guide is included.

6. Visa, insurance and taxes

  • Is the visa fee included or separate? Who applies for it?
  • Is travel insurance included?
  • Are all taxes included? For overseas tour packages, a tax collected at source may apply under income tax rules, so ask for the exact amount in writing.

7. What is not included

Ask for the exclusions list. Typical exclusions are personal expenses, tips, optional tours, extra meals, laundry and anything not listed under inclusions.

8. Payment, change and cancellation terms

  • How much is payable now and when are the next payments due?
  • What is the cancellation charge at different dates?
  • What happens if a hotel or a flight changes?
  • Whom do you call if there is a problem during the trip?

Domestic and international packages differ in a few ways

An international package usually involves a visa, more document checks, foreign exchange and possibly a longer flight. A domestic package may depend more on road transfers, season and local permits for some regions. In both cases, read the day-wise itinerary, because the real experience lives there and not in the headline.

Group size, season and flexibility

The same itinerary can look very different for two people and for a family of six, because room types, vehicle size and entry tickets change with group size. Peak seasons, festivals and school holidays also change hotel availability and the options on offer. If you have a fixed date, book early; if you are flexible, ask whether a nearby date gives a better plan.

Before you pay: five questions to write down

  1. Which exact hotels and room types are confirmed?
  2. Which items are not included and will I pay for them on the spot?
  3. What is the change and cancellation rule at each date?
  4. Who is my contact during the trip, and how do I reach them?
  5. When will I receive vouchers and tickets?

Keep the answers in writing, by email or message, and keep them with your booking.

Is a package cheaper than booking separately?

Sometimes yes and sometimes no, so compare like with like. A package bundles flights, hotels, transfers and tours, which saves your time and often gives access to better hotel rates. Booking everything yourself gives more control but takes more research and leaves you to solve problems alone. Ask for a quote on your exact dates, then price the same hotels and flights separately before deciding.

Also consider the value of support. If a flight changes or a transfer does not arrive, a package provider has a duty to help you. That support is part of what you pay for, so ask how it works and what the emergency contact is.

After booking

Check each voucher against the written offer when you receive it. If something does not match, raise it immediately, because changes are usually easier before travel than during it.

Frequently asked questions

What is usually excluded from a holiday package?

Commonly excluded items are personal expenses, optional tours, tips, meals not mentioned in the plan, visa fees (unless stated), insurance (unless stated) and anything not listed in the inclusions.

What is the difference between private and shared transfers?

A private transfer is a vehicle for your group only. A shared transfer is a vehicle shared with other travellers and may follow a fixed route and timing.

Why are prices shared on request?

Package cost depends on dates, hotel category, the number of travellers, flights and the season, so a quote is prepared for your specific plan.
